The Beginning

Born in the
City of Joy

In 1964, with a passion for India's disappearing weaving traditions and a vision to preserve them, Gourisaria Sarees was born in the bustling lanes of Kolkata — the City of Joy.

Our founders believed that a saree is not merely a garment — it is a story told in thread, a memory woven in silk, a legacy passed from mother to daughter. Every saree we carry is hand-selected, every artisan we partner with is treated as family.

Today, 60 years on, that founding principle remains unchanged. We travel to the source — Varanasi, Kanjivaram, Chanderi, Sambalpuri — and bring their finest works directly to you.

Our Journey Through Time

1964

The Founding

Gourisaria Sarees opens its first store in the heart of Kolkata, hand-picking the finest Banarasi silks and Bengali cotton sarees for the discerning women of the city.

1975

Going South

The first pilgrimage to Kanjivaram. A direct relationship with Tamil Nadu's master weavers is established, bringing authentic temple-border Kanjivaram silks to Kolkata for the first time.

1990

A Second Address

The demand for Gourisaria's curations grows beyond Kolkata. A second boutique is established, and the first bespoke saree-sourcing service is launched for bridal trousseaux.

Chanderi & Beyond

Expansion into Chanderi, Sambalpuri, and Paithani traditions. The collection grows to over 2,000 unique sarees; Gourisaria becomes a trusted name for connoisseurs across India.

2015

The Digital Chapter

Gourisaria embraces the digital age while maintaining its artisanal soul. An online presence is established, bringing Kolkata's curated saree expertise to women across the globe.
